McClain Pit Archaeological Survey

Owner: Centennial Materials, Inc.

Location: Franktown, Colorado

Project Description:
An archaeological survey was conducted for a gravel pit expansion project near Franktown, Colorado. American Geological Services conducted the survey for Centennial Materials, under Permit No. M-77-117 to the Mined Land Reclamation Board, Division of Minerals and Geology, Department of Natural Resources. The survey was performed in order to determine whether there were sites or structures possessing historical significance that were eligible to the State Register of Historic Places which would be affected by the gravel pit expansion. Archaeological investigations are mandated by state legislation in the State Register of Historic Places, CRS 24-80.1-101 to 108, which stipulates that the planning and activities of state agencies should include the preservation of sites and structures possessing historical significance.

The study involved a file search to identify any previously recorded sites in the study area. Surface reconnaissance was performed by walking parallel transacts across the project area. Two archaeological sites, and three isolated artifacts were located.
