Project Summary for
Marpi Point Coastal Aquifer Investigation

Client: Asiana Airlines, Seoul Korea

Location: Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

Project Description:
AGS is conducting extensive hydrogeologic studies to provide 2,000,000 gallons per day of freshwater for two golf courses and a hotel and condominium complex. The scope of work includes: well Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana drilling; saline aquifer profiling; extensive long term pumping test; ground water tidal fluctuation monitoring; water quality analysis; geophysical testing; hydrologic modeling; calculation of saltwater upconing and permissible pumping rates; design of fresh water lens collection tunnel system; salt water barrier well system design; ground water recharge system. The primary problem was the thin freshwater lens which was floating on saltwater. The contact was gradational and the lens varied in thickness. AGS employed a variety of modeling programs to evaluate and impacts of salt water intrusion, upconing and for the evaluation of barrier techniques. The primary innovation was the us of basal collection tunnel techniques to develop a solution which was capable of producing the best quality water without causing severe upconing problems.
