Project Summary for
Western Refrigerating & Cold Storage Soil Vapor Extraction

Owner: Western Refrigerating & Cold Storage Company

Location: Santa Maria, California

Project Description:
Gasoline Contamination Gasoline contamination was discovered as a result of soil borings installed through the former location of a 1,000 gallon gasoline UST. American Geological Services completed the soil investigation by defining the lateral and vertical extent of contamination. After the contaminant plume was identified, American Geological Services designed a soil vapor extraction system to remediate the site. Three vapor extraction and four vent wells were installed and a vacuum was applied via an internal combustion engine. The engine was operated on propane and used the extracted gasoline vapors as a supplemental fuel source. The system was operated for a total of 59 days. Confirmation soil boring data showed a decrease in BTEX levels between 91% and 100%. The site was approved for site closure in March, 1998.
