Mark A. Arnold, C.P.G., R.G.


President & CEO

Mr. Arnold is a certified and registered professional geologist and geochemist with more than 18 years experience in exploration and mining, and environmental projects from 24 countries. He is a certified professional geologist and a registered geologist with the state of Wyoming and Wisconsin. He has worked in both the private and public sectors designing, implementing, and managing geologic, geochemical, and environmental investigations. He specializes in exploration and environmental geochemistry and project management. Mr. Arnold has personally been involved in numerous geochemical surveys from which several thousand samples were collected from many sample medias. He has been involved in many environmental investigation and remediation projects. He is experienced in the design and implementation of many types of remediation systems. He is responsible for writing bid proposals for government and private projects. He has created strict QA/QC and Health and Safety procedures that are used on all projects. Mr. Arnold has extensive experience utilizing various computer applications for geochemical and ground water modeling, geologic mapping, geostatistics, contaminant fate and transport, CAD, and 3-D graphics modeling. He is experienced in Quality Control and Chain of Custody procedures. He is experienced in surface and underground drilling, and with geotechnical, geophysical, and analytical instruments. Mr. Arnold is OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 certified. Mr. Arnold has served as a board member of the Environmental Advisor Committee for the Colorado Contractors Association, and various board positions for the Colorado Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists. Mr. Arnold has authored or coauthored numerous geologic and environmental publications.

Grant J. Tonkin, MBA, R.G.


Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Tonkin is a registered geologist with 23 years of field geologic and business management consulting experience. He has planned, budgeted and managed various surface and underground, precious and base metal projects, as well as coal exploration projects. In Mr. Tonkin's role as a project geologist, he has developed personnel policies, computer programs and financial controls to help in management of both geological and environmental projects. In addition, he has extensive experience in supervising professionals and laborers. He also has considerable experience in negotiating agreements and securing federal, state and local permits. He is responsible for the development and implementation of management reporting systems, cost and staffing analysis, budgeting, productivity/efficiency analysis and employee relations for a variety of clients.

Glen Thomas White, R.G., R.E.A.


Regional Manager

Mr. White has over 15 years experience as an environmental geologist. He is experienced in a wide variety of geological and environmental investigations and projects. He is a California registered geologist and registered class I environmental assessor. He has extensive experience in in-situ and above ground bioremediation of soil and ground water contamination. He is experienced in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of a wide variety of remediation systems. He is responsible for the management of all west coast site investigation and remediation projects. These projects include UST removals, installation of soil borings and monitoring wells, soil and water sampling, bioremediation, soil vapor extraction, pump and treat, aquifer testing, and monitoring. He has extensive experience with a wide variety of contaminated sites including chlorinated and non-chlorinated hydrocarbons, fuel oxygenates (MTBE), and inorganic contaminants.

Jack Johnson


Senior Project and Construction Manager

Mr. Johnson’s positions during his career include construction manager, project manager, estimator, project engineer, field/materials engineer, geotechnical/foundation engineer, craft supervisor, and heavy equipment operator. His experience in environmental remediation and waste minimization was acquired while employed by AWS Remediation, PRI Environmental, West Hazmat Companies, and Geo-Con, Inc. Projects included open pit mine slope reduction, solidification/stabilization, air sparging/vapor extraction, demolition, UST removal, lead and asbestos, and resource recovery work. Mr. Johnson developed a strong background in pipeline and pump station construction. Projects included: Project manager for 250 KM of twin butt welded 60” mortar-lined steel pipe for water transmission in Saudi Arabia; Chef de Project for 365 KM of butt-welded 42” steel pipe for natural gas transmission in Algeria; Project engineer for the installation of 30 miles of 36” pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe and 14” ductile iron pipe for water transmission in North Dakota; Spread foreman for 30 miles of 30” pre-stressed concrete cylinder water pipe in Wyoming. Mr. Johnson has extensive expertise in highway and street construction, aggregate crushing, asphalt and concrete production and paving.

Robert W. Rogers, P.E.


Senior Engineer

Mr. Rogers has over thirty years of widely diversified experience in project and personnel management for projects involving soil and rock mechanics, foundation engineering, hazardous waste disposal, engineering and environmental geology, resource planning and development, and materials testing. His experience includes management of projects for many state and county highways, bridges, railroad facilities, ski resorts, single-family residential developments, multi-story industrial and comercial structures, oil and gas and geothermal developments, power plants, sanitary landfills, dams and reservoirs, and foundation design for the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline.

Jeffery E. Ludwig


Senior Remediation Site Manager

Mr. Ludwig has managed environmental construction, remediation and demolition projects for twelve years. His technical responsibilities include cost estimating and tracking, site supervision, construction, demolition, drilling, health and safety, and reporting. His experience encompasses a wide variety of sites, including above and below ground storage tanks, hazardous and radioactive wastes, mine reclamation, facility demolition, and bioremediation. While serving with Toltest and R&R International Mr. Ludwig was the Site Superintendent/DO Manager for work conducted under an AFCEE Region VI environmental remediation contract at Malmstrom AFB, Fairchild AFB, Lowry AFB, and F.E. Warren AFB. Mr. Ludwig was responsible for field supervision of all craft labor, management of subcontractors, field scheduling and field health and safety. Mr. Ludwig has supervised the execution of over $6 million in work with zero OSHA reportable accidents and zero lost time accidents. Technologies used at these sites have included soil vapor extraction, bioventing, air sparging, low temperature thermal desorption, bioremediation, stabilization of both radioactive and non-radioactive materials, slurry wall construction, and construction dewatering.

Joseph R. Anzman


Senior Geophysicist

Formulated, planned, conducted and managed geophysical programs for groundwater, engineering, geothermal and minerals exploration. Reviewed, evaluated and interpreted geophysical data; geophysical experience includes resistivity, induced polarization, gravity, magnetics, electromagnetics, refraction seismic and airborne. Worked in contiguous 48 states, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Philippine Islands, Peru. Prepared and monitored geophysical budgets; coordinated geophysical programs within the framework of project objectives; worked with and supervised geophysical contractors; consulted with management and project/geologic staff regarding judicious and effective utilization of geophysical methods and coordination of geology and geophysics.

James M. Beck, P.E.


Senior Mining, Environmental and Hazardous Waste Engineer

Mr. Beck is a registered professional engineer specializing in the design, evaluation, and implementation of environmental programs for industry. Mr. Beck's professional experience includes over 17 years experience in various aspects of mining, environmental engineering, and waste management with major nationwide engineering and consulting firms, preceded by 6 years in engineering and operations assignments with major natural resource companies. Mr. Beck has completed a wide range of assignments on behalf of business and industrial clients, legal counsel, and financial entities. His mining experience has spanned precious and base metals, coal and oil shale, and industrial minerals. He is experienced in underground and open pit mine planning and operations, extractive metallurgy, and coal processing. Environmental services have included site investigation and characterization, remedial design and management of remediation programs, RCRA compliance program development and implementation, environmental compliance audits and due-diligence assessments (including complex, multi-facility industrial programs), Iowa-level radioactive waste management, evaluation and acquisition of project permitting requirements, project feasibility studies and economic analyses, water supply development, wastewater treatment, and site closure and reclamation. In addition, Mr. Beck routinely provides independent third-party review of technical documents, cost estimating and verification, technical coordination of PRP cost recovery actions, and expert witness services.

Susan K. Komarek


Senior Wildlife Biologist

Ms. Komarek has over 22 years experience in Wildlife Biology, Natural Resource Management and Botany. She has worked in both private and public sectors with threatened and endangered plants and animals. Ms. Komarek has worked primarily in the Western U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii), Mexico and Central America. She is responsible for biological and ecological assessments.

Thomas A. Colbert

Senior Scientist

Thomas A. Colbert is an environmental consultant who has been involved with the environmental and mining industries since the early 1970s. He has served clients in the public and private sectors, specializing in projects in mining, agriculture and natural resources. His technical background encompasses the areas of soils, land reclamation and environmental assessment, and he is the author of numerous papers and publications pertaining to these fields. His particular expertise is in the areas of acid rock drainage, high elevation revegetation, cyanide mitigation, mine waste management, and heavy metals. Mr. Colbert has been involved in such notable high elevation mine sites as the New World Project near Yellowstone, Noranda’s Montanore project in Montana, Alaska’s Usibelli and Diamond Chuitna mines, and in Colorado, Sunnyside Basin, Climax Molybdenum, Mid-Continent Coal, Snowmass Coal, Rico, and others. He conducted extensive geostatistical studies in connection with the Cotter Corporation Uranium Mill RI/FS pertaining to off-site soil and vegetation contamination, and the Lincoln Park domestic and agricultural water use survey. As a consultant to the City of Denver Mr. Colbert analyzed soil and vegetation data from the Globe ASARCO Smelter RI/FS, and was also involved in the Uravan Mill RI/FS. He has consulted to the state mining regulatory programs in Alaska and Montana, conducted mine permit reviews and NEPA assessments for the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, and one project for the Colorado Inactive Mines Program. He currently represents CDPHE as a reclamation expert at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Mr. Colbert was an instructor in soils at both Colorado State University and Texas A&M University, and, for several years, worked in reclamation and revegetation research for the Department of Agronomy at CSU. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in Environmental Policy and Management at the University of Denver, where he teaches courses in mine waste management and reclamation, environmental risk assessment, and environmental sampling. He helped develop the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s technical course in mine waste management, and co-authored and edited the National Park Service Environmental Handbook for Cyanide Leaching Operations. Mr. Colbert has been a long-standing member of the High Altitude Revegetation Committee and serves on the Advisory Board of the Environmental Technology Program at Colorado Mountain College.

Mark R. Merline


Resident Geologist and Project Manager

Mr. Merline serves as AGS’s resident geologist and project manager for environmental projects located throughout the Pacific Rim countries. Mr. Merline has supervised or conducted more than 200 site assessments, UST investigations, and ground water monitoring. He has conducted phase I & II investigations, and site closures. These projects involved: historic environmental audits, site characterizations, risk assessments, remedial excavation reports, report of findings, work plans, remediation projects, vapor extraction, air stripping, and air sparging systems, and bioremediation projects. Mr. Merline is responsible for site investigations, soil and ground water sampling and monitoring programs, installation and operation of soil and ground water remediation systems. He is involved in hydrologic investigations, pumping tests and ground water quality testing for water supply for several major hotel, resort and golf course developments. He acts as technical representative for various clients with the regulatory agencies.

Maximino E. Simian


Resident Geologist 

Mr. Simian serves as AGS’s resident geologist a for environmental projects located throughout the Pacific Rim countries. Mr. Simian is a field geologist with 5 years of experience in geological, geotechnical, environmental, and construction supervision and inspection activities.  Mr. Simian has performed observation and testing services during construction.  He has performed field and underground structural mapping, layout of rock support, core logging, and sample and data collection and reporting.  Mr. Simian’s experience includes reviewing plans and specifications, inspection, and preparing daily reports.   Mr. Simian has conducted environmental site assessments, UST investigations, and ground water monitoring. Mr. Simian is responsible for site investigations, soil and ground water sampling and monitoring programs, installation and operation of soil and ground water remediation systems. He is involved in hydrologic investigations, pumping tests and ground water quality testing for water supply for several industrial clients. He acts as technical representative for various clients with the regulatory agencies. Mr. Simian is fluent in Spanish and English.

Dr. Bob Moran

Senior Geochemist

Dr. Moran has over 26 years experience in mining and AMD characterization and mitigation. This experience has included government and private sector work from numerous mining sites located in the US and internationally. He has been involved in the geochemical characterization of the AMD waters and evaluation of treatment methodologies and the development of Hazardous Ranking Systems (HRS). He has been involved in the review of monitoring and permitting guidelines for the State of Colorado for Acid Rock Drainage and Cyanide use. He also was involved in the review of the World Banks Mining Environmental guidelines. Dr. Moran’s will provide assistance in design of the geochemical and other monitoring and sampling criteria for this project.

Dorinda Bair

Senior Geologist and Geochemist

Ms. Bair’s experience includes 13 years of gold and silver exploration and production in the United States and Russia. The types of systems worked on were mesothermal, epithermal, VMS, and gold porphyry. This included work in open pits and underground as well as in exploration. Specific duties included mapping, construction of geological cross sections coupled with target projection, hole planning and drill supervision on core and reverse circulation drill rigs; and computer data entry. In addition she has worked for the U.S. Geological Survey where she performed fluid inclusion analysis and petrography; CO2 extraction for isotope analysis and basic operation of a MAT 252 mass spectrometer, data entry, library research and water sampling. She has worked for Echo bay Minerals, Echo bay Alaska, Echo Bay Kuranakh Russia, Placer Dome, Kennecott, and WGM.

Travis Helms

Senior Geologist

Mr. Helms is a geologist and geochemist with four years experience in mining, mineral exploration, and environmental projects.  He has been involved with both domestic and international projects, and has worked with a multinational team of geologists and technicians.  He is skilled in geologic field methods including reconnaissance, prospect, open pit, and underground mapping; sampling; logging; and surveying. Mr. Helms is experienced in a wide variety of environmental drilling and sampling procedures, soil boring and monitoring well installations. Additionally, he has experience in reflected and refracted microscopy, analytical methods, structural analysis and geochemical data evaluation, especially as applied to mineral deposits.  He has participated in geochemical and geophysical surveys, and has supervised and supported reverse circulation and diamond drilling programs.  Mr. Helms is well versed in a wide range of geologic computer applications including GIS, digitizing, drafting, graphics, mineral exploration, mining, structural, and petrologic software.

Daniel L. Hambrick

Environmental Geologist

Mr. Hambrick graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology, from the California State University at Stanislaus.  Mr. Hambrick also has Associate of Science degrees in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources, and Physical Sciences.  He has considerable experience in underground storage tank site remediation.  Mr. Hambrick is also experienced with Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.  His experience in mapping and surveying includes projects involving accurate mapping of natural resources.  Mr. Hambrick also has experience with meadow and creek restorations.  He possesses valuable teamwork and troubleshooting skills developed during his twenty-year military career.

Phil Brown

Principal Hydrogeologist

Mr. Brown presents over 21 years of professional experience in geology and hydrogeology. His background encompasses the sciences of geology, geophysics, and hydrogeology.  His geologic expertise has been utilized in environmental, geotechnical and mineral resource applications.  His hydrogeologic project experience includes groundwater exploration and supply, groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling, water quality monitoring, environmental assessments, environmental baseline studies and water rights adjudication’s.Mr. Brown has managed a variety of projects in the western United States, New Zealand, South America and Asia.  Major projects have been for the Salt River Project, AMAX Gold, Meridian, Cyprus, and Peabody Coal; petrochemical corporations such as Shell Oil, New Zealand Refinery, and UNOCAL; and Waste Management. Relevant achievements include the following: Management of a major water exploration project for the AMAX Guanaco Mine in the Atacoma Desert of northern Chile; Implementation of a groundwater modeling and monitoring program for the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming to assess the impact of coal mining on shallow aquifers; Supervision of baseline groundwater studies for the La Loma Coal Project, Caesar, Colombia, South America.

Dr. Samuel Bamberg

Principal Ecologist

Dr. Bamberg is a biologist and ecologist with 26 years experience in environmental consulting related to resource development, especially mining projects. He has worked in environmental studies and permitting for all types of resource utilization including mining for metals, uranium, and industrial minerals; and in development for industrial, commercial, and residential sites; has specialized in reclamation in extreme and arid environments; has recently been active in the hazardous waste management field assessing the health risks and environmental effects of chemical and radioactive contaminants. He has been an expert witness at public hearings, and provided information in court proceedings. Dr. Bamberg has had extensive experience with metals uptake by plants which were irrigated with contaminated mine waters. He has also been involved in the evaluation of livestock which have ingested these high metal content plants.

Edwin "Ned" Avary, P.E.

Senior Mining Engineer

Mr. Avary is a geologist and mining engineer with over 35 years experience in mining. He is highly experienced in open pit, underground and alluvial mining methods, operations and evaluations. He has specialized experience in shaft sinking, underground development, blasting and grouting. Recent projects include: Executed a bulk sampling program for alluvial diamonds in Brazil for Hillsborough Resources Ltd. ; Preliminary schedule and mine costs for Montana alluvial sapphire project.; Exploratory RC drilling program at Fire Creek Project, Nevada for AURENCO. Other projects included: work as part of an engineering task force on design of the Lahir open pit gold mine; feasibility evaluation of a small gypsum mining project in California, with subsequent permitting of the project; Panamanian open pit gold mine feasibility study; Chilean copper mine truck/loader and crusher location optimization study; waste dump sizing for Nevada open pit gold mine; miscellaneous small evaluations and proposals.
